What graduate programmes are available?

Our Graduate Development Programme aims to provide graduates with relevant on-the-job experience and exposure through job rotation, work assignments, and special projects; supported by relevant formal learning programmes and on-the-job coaches. Our programme is split up into six streams, each providing graduates with an introduction to South African retailing within the context of a world class retailer, as well as specialised learning.

Our six graduate streams are…

Store Operations
With this stream, you will find out what it is like to lead a team, deal with customers and manage a store with an annual budget of as much as R250 million. This programme provides you with a fast tracked opportunity to be part of the management team in one of our stores and will provide you with experience in the operational areas of property development, and store planning and design. If you are a graduate who is passionate about retail and wants to build a career at the rock face of our business, this is for you!

Human Resources
Are you a Human Resources or Industrial Psychology graduate looking to apply your learning in an exciting and fast-paced environment? This stream will not only provide you with an opportunity to work in various HR departments, including IR, Training and Development, OD, SAP, and Compensation but also ensure a comprehensive introduction to the world of South African retailing and our business operations.

Information Systems / IT / Supply Chain
Join this exciting stream in our business and be a part of partnering to develop, deliver, and support retail solutions and services, based on best practice to enable Pick n Pay's vision. This programme will provide you with the relevant experience and exposure to ensure that you are part of developing and implementing robust and effective solutions to provide superior service to our customers. If you have a related degree in the areas of IT, Supply Chain or Logistics, apply now for a graduate development programme in this stream.

Buying / Category Management
Here you will source (locally and internationally) a wide variety, good range of products at competitive prices for our customers. If you are a qualified graduate interested in the areas of product development, food technician, procurement, pricing and promotional analysis, customer insights, demand planning, working on our private label, and category management in the areas of food, clothing or general merchandise, this fantastic opportunity awaits you! Finance
Because financial control, analysis, and reporting underpin all of our key business decisions, we are looking for the very best finance graduates! Do you have the expertise to join our centralised finance team at our Head Office in Cape Town? This stream provides graduates with all finance-related degrees, a number of different opportunities to build a career with Pick n Pay. Whether you are interested in qualifying as a CA, being an internal auditor, an accountant or financial controller, this programme is for you!

Marketing
In this stream you will spend about 12 months gaining overall retail business exposure, as well as working with our marketing specialists in brand marketing, customer relationship marketing, online marketing, in-store marketing and execution, and external marketing. This stream provides you, a marketing graduate, with the opportunity to help grow awareness of the Pick n Pay brand and the values it represents.

Definitions:

Internship:

There are basically two types of internships:

  • The Undergraduate Internship: Usually with bigger organisations that pick undergraduates to attend the internship. It often takes places during the holidays and the average durations is a few weeks. In most cases the intern will receive some sort of stipend or salary and this type of internship may lead to a job offer to the intern once he / she is finished with their studies.
  • The Graduate Internship: This type of internship could be paid or unpaid and it is to gain practical work experience after the qualification has been completed and in a job related to the qualification. It could be from a few weeks or even one or two years long. This type of internship could also lead to permanent employment.

Learnerships:

A learnership is an occupational qualification and it consists of theory and work-based experience and practical skills, with formal assessment and a qualification. At the end of the learnership the candidate may be offered permanent employment.

In-service training:

In-service training is to gain practical work experience during studies. It usually takes place after a few years of theory has been successfully completed. It is essential work experience that is part of the qualification and the in-service training is necessary to achieve the qualification. It could be paid or unpaid.
