The National Metrology Institute of South Africa (NMISA) is mandated by the Measurement Units and National Measurement Standards Act, No 18 of 2006, under the auspices of the Department of Trade and Industry (the dti) to maintain, develop and disseminate the National Measurement Standards for South Africa.

In essence, the NMISA provides the international link to traceability for all measurements in South Africa and hence contributes to South Africa’s global competitiveness.

Measurements include, amongst others, electrical measurements (voltage; capacitance; resistance etc.); chemical measurements (amount of substance; certification of reference materials, etc.); optical measurements (refractive index; optical power; laser wavelength, etc.) and mechanical measurements (force; mass; pressure; torque).

The position:
A vacancy exists for an Intern to assist the SHEQ Department in ensuring the maintenance of safety, health, environment and quality (SHEQ) systems in line with the existing NMISA Total Quality Management System.

Major Challenges and Responsibilities:
- Assist with conducting hazard / aspects identification and risk/impact assessment
- Assist with management of operational controls associated with hazard, aspect, impact and risk identified
- Assist with SHEQ management system documentation, document control and record keeping
- Application of EHS legislation and other requirements
- Assist with SHEQ activities, internal audits and action requests
- Ensure that filing is up to date (electronic and hard copy filing)
- General SHEQ tasks as and when required

Educational Qualification and Experience:
- B Degree in Safety Management / Environmental Science or related field
- Experience in a technical field will be an added advantage
- Basic knowledge of relevant EHS legislation
- Basic Knowledge of Management System standards, particularly ISO 14001 and OHSAS 18001and ISO/IEC 17025.
- Proficient in MS Office software packages
- Good administrative skills

The position requires a pro-active person with a positive attitude, attention to details, who has willingness towards continuous learning. An individual who follows / executes tasks according to prescribed procedures / policies. Good communication, professionalism and good interpersonal skills are needed. Telephone etiquette and fluency in English is required as the candidate will be expected to communicate with individuals at all levels.

Definitions:

Internship:

There are basically two types of internships:

  • The Undergraduate Internship: Usually with bigger organisations that pick undergraduates to attend the internship. It often takes places during the holidays and the average durations is a few weeks. In most cases the intern will receive some sort of stipend or salary and this type of internship may lead to a job offer to the intern once he / she is finished with their studies.
  • The Graduate Internship: This type of internship could be paid or unpaid and it is to gain practical work experience after the qualification has been completed and in a job related to the qualification. It could be from a few weeks or even one or two years long. This type of internship could also lead to permanent employment.

Learnerships:

A learnership is an occupational qualification and it consists of theory and work-based experience and practical skills, with formal assessment and a qualification. At the end of the learnership the candidate may be offered permanent employment.

In-service training:

In-service training is to gain practical work experience during studies. It usually takes place after a few years of theory has been successfully completed. It is essential work experience that is part of the qualification and the in-service training is necessary to achieve the qualification. It could be paid or unpaid.
